When John Michael Thomas decided to honor Elizabeth Buckley, his friend and classmate who died from a brain tumor, he remembered how much she loved peacocks.
He wanted to build a life-sized bronze peacock fountain in Elizabeth’s favorite park in the city. He figured it would be a place for people to relax and be inspired.
John Michael raised $52,000 to buy the custom fountain and have it shipped from the United Kingdom. That money came from fundraisers and donations — some for $1,000, but most much smaller. One boy sent an envelope containing $1.75.
“I cannot believe just how good people are,” John Michael says. “The community has taught me that people really do care. I know Elizabeth would be pleased.”
