For his project, Jacob led a team of Scouts in bringing the benefits of 3D printing to the New Fairfield Senior Center. Together, they designed and prototyped assistive devices like bottle openers, bag holders, and pencil grips to help seniors with everyday tasks. They also raised funds to donate a Makerbot Sketch 3D printer, along with filament and tools, to the senior center.
Under Jacob’s leadership, they developed a complete lesson plan and instructional manual to ensure staff and seniors could learn the technology and use it independently. The team also organized and led a hands-on workshop, where they taught seniors and staff how to use the printer and gathered feedback for future printable projects. In response, they created an accessible digital library of assistive tools and fun craft designs. To make the learning sustainable, they recorded the workshops and created easy-to-use files for ongoing access.
