Riya and her helpers worked on a large-scale mural project for the Marine Science Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and caring for marine life in the San Francisco Bay. The project aimed to transform one of the Institute’s blank exterior walls into a vibrant and educational canvas centered on marine conservation. The mural focused on specific marine habitats, such as seagrass meadows or kelp forests, and was designed to include informative elements to engage and educate viewers about the importance of ocean ecosystems and the Institute’s mission.
Riya had been involved with the Marine Science Institute for years, initially as a camp attendee learning about marine life and conservation. For an additional two years, she served as a junior volunteer, helping care for both the marine animals and younger camp participants, as well as supporting facility maintenance. In the years following COVID-19, the Institute had been actively upgrading its facilities, including improvements to the aquarium that houses many of the marine species under study. These updates had left several walls of the building bare — an opportunity Riya seized to blend art with science and support the Institute’s educational goals through this mural project.
