At James’ old elementary school, the kindergarten teacher had a vision: a playground specifically tailored for younger children. Inspired by the idea, James took on the task of designing a unique nature-themed playground. After presenting his concept to the school, it was approved, and the project quickly began to take shape.
The playground’s centerpiece is a platform surrounding an existing tree, with features like balance beam logs and a log stump obstacle course. James rallied the help of dozens of volunteers, using materials generously donated by local lumber yards and individuals who provided large logs. In total, the project required over 450 volunteer hours and many long, dedicated days.
To bring the vision to life, grass was removed, sprinkler lines were capped, and concrete footers were poured to secure the platform and balance beams. A tall border was added to enclose the area, a platform was built around the tree, weed barriers were laid, and logs were set in place before bark chips were spread to complete the playground.
