Restored a Historic Cemetery

Luka and his helpers renovated Oakland Historic Cemetery, one of North Louisiana’s earliest burial grounds, dating back to the 1840s and recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. Among its various sections lies the Hebrew Rest, where many of the city’s early inhabitants were laid to rest. Over the years, this particular area had suffered extensive damage from neglect, weather and vandalism, leaving numerous tombstones in disrepair.

Seeking guidance from experts and the Cemetery Preservation Society, Luka organized a major renovation of the cemetery, which involved cleaning, repairing and restoring dozens of graves. The process spanned multiple stages: recovering scattered fragments, gently cleansing and mending them, reinforcing the foundations, and carefully reconstructing the tombstones to honor the memory of those buried there. Throughout the project, he meticulously documented each step and created a spatial map to ensure that Oakland Historic Cemetery’s rich heritage endures for future generations.
