Augustus and his helpers created an African-American Veterans Memorial in Woodland Cemetery using 90 discarded and damaged veterans’ headstones. They also paved a memorial fountain with 1,500 bricks and replaced 400 feet of a severely damaged cemetery pathway with a new one. The project involved over 200 volunteers who contributed more than 600 hours of service, drawing national media attention and a visit by Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin during an MLK memorial event.
