Restored Historic Church Cemetery

Peter and his helpers restored the cemetery at Forest Chapel CME. This 260-year-old cemetery was Spartanburg County’s first integrated cemetery. It was bought by an emancipated slave soon after the Civil War, when it already contained hundreds of fieldstones dating back to 1765. Scouts, community members, family, and friends contributed over 200 hours to the project, which took seven months to complete.

In recognition of the project, Peter received the John Lewis Youth Leadership Award, which recognizes civic-minded young people who have made significant contributions to their community. The project was also featured on two local news stations.
